The Variety of Headaches

One of the major medical conditions that are prevalent in this time is headache. There are also migraines, conditions that are looked upon as a form of severe headaches. What seems to be uncommon knowledge to most people is that there are many different types of headaches, caused by different things and therefore treated differently. Below we will try to list some common forms of headache for you to understand the condition better.

Cluster headache

This type is particularly common among the male gender; it is characterized by its constant recurrence. It is sudden in onset and characterized by severe pain on one side of the head, particularly around the temples. This type of headache is debilitating and may cause normal everyday activities to come to a standstill. The condition often occurs along with watery eyes and nasal congestion. The cause of this headache is yet to be established for the doctors to be able to cure it. For now medication is normally given just to relieve symptoms and reduce their recurrence.

headacheTension headache

The pain occurring during this form can be described as throbbing all round pain. It is not debilitating in nature and usually has no nausea or vomiting associated. It is presumed to be caused by tension around the neck muscles. In many cases, such headaches can be relieved by taking over the counter medication such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Sinus headache

Sinuses are spaces found in the skull bones. There are three different sinuses in the skull. Infections may cause inflammation in the sinuses, and this will lead to build up of pus and subsequent fever. Nasal dropping, the feeling of fluid dropping into your throat at the back of your mouth is a frequent indicator of sinuses inflammation. Another manifestation of the condition is a headache, which may take on a chronic character. It is treated by relieving the cause of infection by giving antibiotics. Nasal decongestants are also used to reduce nasal blockages and prevent the development of sinuses inflammation.

Migraines

The most common classification of migraines identifies 7 different types. Although most people look upon migraine as a form of headache, medical experts are not so sure on that score. In fact, one of the 7 identified types of migraine comes with no headache at all. However, in the vast majority of cases, severe headaches are the most common symptoms of migraine.

While headaches are rather difficult to treat, the situation with migraines is even worse. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for migraines for now. There are suggestions that alternative medicine can offer some options, namely yoga meditation and acupuncture, which allegedly can go a long way towards reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.
