Hangover Remedies – The Do’s and Don’ts
The most important thing to understand about hangover remedies is that none of them comes with a magic button that you press and suddenly feel as good as new. The best way to deal with a hangover is drinking in moderation, alternating your drinks with water or simply avoiding alcoholic beverages entirely. Still, if you do find yourself in need of a hangover cure for the morning after, consider the following remedies:
Sleeping It Off
As they say, the simplest method is usually the best. If you don’t have anywhere to be the next day, do your exhausted body a favor and let it metabolize by staying in bed until the afternoon. Remember, sleep deprivation will only make the hangover symptoms seem even worse.
If you don’t have the luxury of sleeping it off, water is the next best choice. Dehydration of the body caused by heavy drinking is the reason for the majority of the negative hangover symptoms. Replacing the lost fluids will go a long way towards making you feel better. Doing this just before you go to sleep will yield the best results, but it also helps the morning after.
Heavy drinking depletes a lot of potassium from your body, which usually leads to high blood pressure the next day. Eating a banana is an effective cure for replenishing the lost electrolytes. If there are no bananas nearby, you can also consider other high-potassium sources like kiwi fruits or avocados.
Honey is another food that contains potassium, but it also contains high fructose levels, which helps your body metabolize the alcohol. You can put a teaspoon of it in your tea or just ingest it by itself, but the best way to get it into your system would be to smear a thin layer of honey on a slice of toast and eat it.
There are also some traditional hangover cures that are popular for all the wrong reasons. Hair of the dog may help you feel better in the short run, but ingesting more alcohol is definitely not the answer, as it usually just leads to an even worse hangover. Drinking coffee is another “cure” that acts as a diuretic and dehydrates you further, while also boosting your blood pressure. Some exercise is normally a good thing, but as we’ve already established, the best thing when you wake up with a hangover is to give your body a good rest.
